Diyarbakir - Five killed in car-bomb

Five people have been killed and around 70 people have been injured in a car-bomb explosion in the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir.

The powerful blast happened as an army vehicle, carrying 50 soldiers, was passing on a road in the city centre, some 100 metres from a military base.

Authorities suspect the Kurdish rebel group, PKK, was behind the attack although nobody has claimed responsibility.

The blast destroyed the army vehicle and five cars and ignited a large blaze that was later extinguished by firefighters.

Two of the five victims were young, one a school girl arriving for evening classes in a nearby school, the other a boy selling tissues in the streets.

Those hurt included about 30 soldiers as well as civilians and teenage students. Several of them suffered serious injuries.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said 'terrorism has reared its ugly head again. But these incidents will not affect our determination to fight terrorism both at home and abroad.'

Turkish security forces have been on alert over the New Year fearing possible attacks by the PKK as planes target rebels in northern Iraq.
