A US diplomat and an embassy driver have been killed in a pre-dawn shooting attack in the Sudanese capital.

The US official died in hospital after the gun attack in Khartoum.

Diplomatic sources said the shooting took place shortly after midnight as the official was heading home in an embassy vehicle.

He had worked for the US Agency for International Development.

It was not immediately clear if it was a targeted attack against the USAID official or a random criminal shooting.

Relations between Sudan and the US have long been strained, most recently over the near five-year conflict in the western region of Darfur where Washington has accused Khartoum of genocide.

A joint UN-African Union (AU) force yesterday took charge of peacekeeping in Darfur, seeking to end almost five years of fighting.

The force replaces a struggling AU mission. The plan is for it ultimately to comprise 20,000 soldiers and 6,000 police, but numbers are currently only about a third of those levels.
