48 people have been killed and at least 80 wounded in a suicide bomb blast at a mosque in northwest Pakistan.

The attack targeted a former interior minister and close ally of President Pervez Musharraf as he prayed during the Eid al-Adha festival.

Ahmed Khan Sherpao survived unhurt but dozens of others were caught in the blast.

Mr Sherpao was interior minister in President Pervez Musharraf's recently dissolved government and is now running in the 8 January elections.

The suspected bomber, sitting in a middle row among the worshippers, detonated his bomb as prayers ended and people gathered around the politician to greet him.

Around 1,200 worshippers were at the mosque at the time of the explosion.

It is the deadliest attack in Pakistan since October, when two suicide bombers killed 139 people at a parade in honour of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
