Gillian Gibbons - Convicted of insulting Islam

The British teacher who was jailed for insulting Islam has arrived in London after being pardoned by Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir.

Gillian Gibbons, from Liverpool, was accompanied from Khartoum by the two British Muslim members of the House of Lords who secured her pardon. She had spent eight days in detention in Sudan.

In a statement, she said she still respected Islam and that she regrets that she will be unable to stay and teach in Sudan.

Ms Gibbons said on her arrival in London that she had gone to Sudan to have an adventure but could not have imagined that things would turn out as they did. She said she is just an ordinary, middle-aged teacher.

She said she was treated very well while she was in prison and she added that she would not like her experience to put anyone off visiting Sudan.
