More than 3,100 people are now known to have been killed by Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh and it is feared the death toll will rise significantly.

The Irish Government has announced that Irish Aid will make up to €500,000 available to assist those affected.

The storm struck the country on Thursday with 250km/h winds that whipped up a 5m tidal surge.

The Red Cross estimates 900,000 families, a figure that accounts for around seven million people, have been affected.

Red Cross and Red Crescent workers said they were using their  network of volunteers to distribute dried food and plastic sheeting for temporary shelters, but that many helpers were themselves victims.
