Four people have drowned off the southwest coast of the Algarve in Portugal.

Three British and one German, all holidaymakers, died while trying to save children who had got into trouble in the water at Sagres.

The children escaped with minor injuries. Three other adults are being treated in hospital.

The Tonel beach was closed for the winter and signs warned that there were no lifeguards on duty.

Four parents died in the incident. Britain's Foreign Office confirmed that two children have been left without both parents and two children have been left without a mother as a result of the tragedy.
