Colombia - Landslide at unofficial mine

At least 24 people have been killed in a landslide at a mine in Colombia.

The victims were amateur local prospectors lured by rumours that there was gold at the mine near the town of Suarez, about 350km from the capital, Bogota.

Rescue workers have been battling though deep mud to bring out the dead and injured after torrential rain caused a landslide at the makeshift mine.

Officials said locals had entered the mine despite warnings it was unsafe because of rumours that there was gold to be found.

Colombia is rich in gold deposits and mining companies are reluctant to operate because of local conflicts.

In many places, people have dug their own mines with no safety regulations.
