The pilot of a Cessna Plane has died after his aircraft crashed into a field near Ard Fert in Co Kerry just before 5pm this evening.

It is believed that he was performing manoeuvres during a festival at the village when the accident happened.

Hewas in his 50s and was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

The scene is sealed off and investigations will be carried out by the gardaí and by the Department of Transport's Air Accident Investigation Unit.

Meanwhile in Co Kildare, the pilot of a small plane escaped injury after he was forced to crash land his aircraft during take off at Kilrush airstrip.

The N78 is closed to traffic as a result of the crash and diversions are being put into operation.
