Just over half of the Irish workforce has some form of pension according to the Irish Pensions Board.
The annual report from the IPB shows that 55% of workers do have a pension and that figure rises to 61% for the age group 30 to 65.
800,000 employees are members of Occupational Pension Schemes while a further 95,000 have Personal Retirement Savings Accounts (PRSAs).
The total fund spervised by the Pensions Board is in excess of €90bn.
IPB Chief Executive Brendan Kennedy, speaking at the launch of the report today, expressed concerns about the number of schemes that fail to file annual reports or fail to file on time.
He also warned of an over reliance on equity in property by some people investing in pension schemes.
Speaking following the publication of the report, Minister for Social and Family Affairs Martin Cullen said he had no opinion on the issue of mandatory pensions at the moment as a Green Paper on pensions will be published in September.
