The Green Party has said its new leadership will be elected within a month after announcing the opening of nominations for leader and deputy leader.

Candidates have until Friday 6 July to deliver their nominations, which must be accompanied by the names and addresses of at least 50 members of the party with voting rights who support the nomination.

The vacancies are a result of Trevor Sargent's decision to step down as leader after the recent election.

By party rules the deputy leadership must be put up for re-election whenever there is a leadership election.

Newly elected Carlow-Kilkenny TD Mary White is the current Deputy Leader of the Party.

Postal ballots will be sent out to all members with voting rights on Monday 9 July, and must be returned by the Tuesday of the following week.
