Dublin City Councillors have voted overwhelming to reject plans for a high-rise development in Ballsbridge.

Developer Sean Dunne had paid €50 million an acre for the Jurys hotel site with plans for a landmark, 32-storey development.

But this evening councillors voted to reject a recommendation by officials that would have allowed high-density apartment and office developments along with big retail outlets.

No councillor voted in favour of the proposal this evening, with many saying it did not suit the character of Ballsbridge and was developer-lead.

Ballsbridge residents had urged the council to reject the plans. Representatives of 14 different residents' associations in the area issued a statement following a meeting last night.

The representatives said that the plans have already been unanimously rejected by the local area committee of councillors and are also opposed by all local TDs.

The group said the density of the development is three times that of the IFSC.
