A member of a gang who gunned down loyalist Billy Wright in the Maze prison has been found dead in his jail cell.
John Kenneway, who returned to prison after his early release licence was revoked, was reportedly found hanged in his cell in Maghaberry Prison this evening. He was pronounced dead at 6.55pm.
Kenneway was part of an Irish National Liberation Army gang of prisoners who shot dead Loyalist Volunteer Force leader Billy Wright in the Maze Prison in December 1997. The murder is the subject of a public inquiry.
A Northern Ireland Prison Service spokesperson confirmed the discovery of the body. The inmate's family, the police and the coroner were informed of the death.
The Prison Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the circumstances, which is in line with standard procedures.
