No extra security measures were in place today when Pope Benedict XVI participated in an annual religious procession outside the Vatican walls in central Rome.
Debate over whether the Pontiff should be better protected during public audiences continued yesterday after a German man jumped a security barrier in St Peter's Square.
The man was tackled by security guards while the Pope appeared not to have noticed the disturbance and kept on waving and blessing the crowd.
Vatican officials said there were no plans to change the long-standing use of open vehicles for the audience inside the Vatican.
When the Pontiff travels abroad, he uses a vehicle fitted with bullet-proof glass.
