Six dead in Sri Lanka bomb blast

At least six people have been killed and 31 wounded in a bomb blast near an air force base just outside the Sri Lankan capital.

The evening rush hour explosion occurred along the main road in Ratmalana, and apparently targeted a passing truck carrying Sri Lankan soldiers.

There has been no claim of responsibility, but police have blamed the attack on the Tamil Tigers, who have been fighting for an independent homeland for minority Tamils for over 35 years.

The blast came four days after a mine attack on an army bus in the heart of the capital, which killed one soldier and wounded six others. That attack was also blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels.

The conflict has claimed more than 60,000 lives in Sri Lanka since the Tamil Tigers began their fight in 1972.
