Election 2007: Reaction to earlier polls

Enda Kenny & Michael McDowell - Bumped into each other on the campaign trail

Both of the main political parties have taken positive messages from two separate opinion polls published this morning.

Fine Gael has said there is a momentum for change in the country; Fianna Fáil said the polls reflected what the party was finding on the doorsteps.

The Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, told a news conference the polls showed that undecided voters were gradually rejecting the alternative on offer.

The Progressive Democrats have warned of an economic recession if the current administration is not returned to power.

The Tánaiste and leader of the Progressive Democrats, Michael McDowell, has said he believes the polls show clearly that there is a swing back to the Government parties.

Mr McDowell said he was quite sure that the electorate would decisively reject a left-wing dominated rainbow coalition next Thursday.

He also rejected the suggestion that the PDs are heading for a meltdown, saying the party is currently ahead of the position it was in in the polls prior to the last election.

The Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, has said he is very happy with the trend in the opinion polls.

Speaking outside St Joseph's Church in Terenure, Mr Kenny said there has been a consistent trend in the polls for quite some time which shows opposition to the current Government.

Mr Kenny added that he believes his party is going to win on Thursday and he rejected the suggestion that Fine Gael had peaked too early.

Labour leader Pat Rabbitte has dismissed an increase in support for Fianna Fáil in today's opinion polls as within the margin on error.

He said it was still all to play for in the election and he said people would have to vote for Labour to bring about change and avoid a government driven by Sinn Féin.
