The board of the Washington-based World Bank is to continue its deliberations today on the future of Paul Wolfowitz, the organisation’s president.

An internal report found he broke the bank's code of conduct after he controversially arranged a pay increase and a promotion for his partner, Shaha Riza, who was also an employee at the bank.

After another behind-closed-doors meeting last night, Mr Wolfowitz’s lawyer said his client would not resign under, what he called, the current cloud surrounding him.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that he is negotiating an exit deal in which he would be largely exonerated of any wrongdoing.
