Bug closes Belfast's Royal Maternity unit

A form of superbug has forced the temporary closure of the neo-natal unit at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Belfast.

No new admissions are being accepted due to the detection of the infection known as enterobacter.

Hospital spokesperson Dr David Suite said the germ is resistant to many drugs used but a specific antibiotic can combat the bacteria.

Three premature babies have been isolated and are being cared for by specially trained nurses. They are said to be in a stable condition.
