Four people have lost their lives in two separate road crashes this afternoon.

A mother in her 30s and her daughters, believed to be aged one and three, were killed in a two-car crash on the main Dublin to Cork road.

They were the occupants of one of the cars involved in the crash, which happened at Longford Pass, between Urlingford and Cashel, in Co Tipperary shortly before 3pm.

The sole occupant of the other car suffered a broken leg and was taken to Clonmel General Hospital.

Meanwhile in Co Mayo, a woman died and two others were injured in an accident near the village of Balla.

The woman was a passenger in a car that was involved in a two-vehicle collision on the N60 Castlebar to Claremorris road.

The driver of the car and another passenger were taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

The road has been closed and gardaí say there will be diversions for several hours to come.
