Provisional garda figures indicate that 441 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving during the Easter bank holiday weekend.

That is a 37% increase compared to the same period last year.

321 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving during the last Easter bank holiday weekend.

On Easter Sunday and Monday, 299 were arrested in a two-day period.

Gardaí say speed is the single greatest cause of death and injury on our roads and they advise motorists to allow plenty of time to safely complete journeys.

The statistics also indicated that during the seven-day period from 2 April to 8 April inclusive a total of 427 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving, up from 394 the previous week.
