Around 1,200 passengers have been evacuated from a Greek cruise ship that ran aground near the Aegean island of Santorini.

Officials said around 300 crew members remained on board the Greek-flagged Sea Diamond, which was listing after its hull was holed.

Louis Hellenic Cruise Lines, which runs the ship, said many Americans and Germans were among the passengers, and there was no record of any Irish people on board.

A spokesperson said no one was hurt in the emergency and that the company was sending another vessel to pick up the passengers.

The evacuation began earlier this afternoon after the ship issued a distress signal.

More than a dozen ships and five navy rescue helicopters are helping with the evacuation effort.
