A two-day general strike called by Zimbabwe's main union organisation has received a poor response from workers.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions called the strike in protest against the failure of President Robert Mugabe's government to deal with the economic crisis.
But most shops and services were operating as normal.
The ZCTU, formerly led by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, called the strike as inflation rose to 1,730% and four out of five people are unemployed.
Security in Zimbabwe had been increased to coincide with the general strike.
Mr Tsvangirai said he believed that Mr Mugabe's days in power were numbered, and the South African President, Thabo Mbeki, said he expected Mr Mugabe to abdicate power peacefully.
Last week, southern African leaders appointed Mr Mbeki to mediate between Mr Mugabe and the opposition.
