Thirteen people, including a baby, were rescued from a fire in a block of flats in Waterford city this morning.

Six were brought to Waterford Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation but there were no reports of serious injuries.

It is believed the fire may have started in the hallway of the four- storey block of flats on O'Connell Street some time after 6.15am.

While a number of firefighters tried to contain the blaze in the hallway, two other units managed to get ladders up to the third floor and started evacuating people.

All the people in the building were rescued and the fire was contained.

There is extensive fire damage to the ground and first floors.

A garda investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
