A new study shows that Ireland lags behind other European countries when it comes to wearing seatbelts.

It was found that three out of every 20 drivers in Ireland still do not belt up.

The report by the European Transport Safety Council looked at seat belt use in the front seat of cars and vans in 24 European countries.

Germany, France and Malta had the greatest number of seatbelt wearers, while Hungary, Greece, Lithuania and Slovakia had the lowest rating.

Ireland ranked in tenth place, with 86% of front seat passengers belting up. However, only 46% of our backseat passengers wear their seatbelt.

Franziska Achterberg, the director of the study, said that Ireland could improve a lot in the area.

Many European countries have a 95% to 99% seatbelt wearing record.

170 drivers die in Ireland every year. 26 lives could be saved every year if 99% of Irish drivers wore their seatbelt.
