At least 11 people including three children have died in a fire on a passenger ferry in Indonesia.

There remains confusion over the exact number on board the stricken vessel and whether everyone had been evacuated.

The head of the Navy rescue team said that 226 people including 15 crew had survived, but it is thought that as many as 320 were on board.

The Navy has also reported that the vessel was still on fire, contradicting earlier reports that it had been put out.

The ferry was on its way to an island off Sumatra when it caught fire soon after dawn some 80km from the port area of the capital, Jakarta.
