The alarm was raised when the mother and her son failed to return to a tourist bus which was part of an organised tour from Galway to the 180m cliffs.

A search got underway at around 4pm. Both bodies were recovered soon after and taken by the rescue helicopter to Galway University Hospital.

The two had bought tickets for the daily tour to the Cliffs at an outlet in Eyre Square earlier today.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who has members of their family missing or who have not returned home to contact them at Ennis or Ennistymon in Co Clare.
