Councillors oppose Cork city expansion

Cork - New boundaries proposed

A Cork County Councillor has described plans for the extension of Cork city's boundary as 'being akin to Napoleon's move on Russia'.

City Manager Joe Gavin is to present a report to city councillors tonight, advocating plans to quadruple the size of the city from 4,000 hectares to over 22,000 hectares.

The new boundaries will take in areas such as Douglas, Glanmire and the airport, including its business park.

Mr Gavin says the extension would provide the city with enough development land to ensure its growth and expansion over the next three decades.

However, there has been a furious reaction by County Councillors. Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan Coleman described it as an 'outlandish proposal', saying it was 'akin to Napoleon's move on Russia' and 'doomed to the same fate'.

Labour County Councillor John Gilroy, who lives in Glanmire, said he would 'vigorously oppose' any expansion in that direction.
