BBC presenter Richard Hammond suffered a 'significant brain injury' when he crashed a high-speed car while filming for the show.

But doctors at Leeds General Infirmary, where the 36-year-old is in a serious but stable condition, said they were 'reasonably optimistic' he would make a good recovery.

Mr Hammond, who was working on the Top Gear show, was airlifted to Leeds after the accident at Elvington airfield near York yesterday.

British health and safety officials and the BBC are carrying out separate investigations into the high-speed car accident.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, former Top Gear presenter Jason Barlow said all possible safety precautions would have been taken in preparation for the stunt.

Reports say the vehicle flipped over and broke up on the runway of Elvington Airfield.
