In Sweden the Opposition leader Fredrik Reinfeldt has declared victory for his centre-right alliance in today's election, ending 12 years of Social Democrat.

The Social Democrat Prime Minister Goran Persson admitted defeat at around 9.30pm Irish time.

Mr Reinfeldt, who is likely to be the next Prime Minister, says he wants to stimulate job growth by cutting taxes and reducing some welfare benefits.

Goran Persson had vowed more spending on the welfare state.
