At least 35 people have been killed in an underground train crash in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia.
More than 47 others were injured when the train came off the rails and overturned in a tunnel.
Officials said the death toll remained 'provisional' with two of those injured in a 'very critical' condition, and emergency services continuing to search the wreckage of the train for bodies.
A fire brigade spokesman said accident that was apparently brought about by 'speed and a failure at the wheel level'.
One of those injured is understood to be the metro driver. The accident happened as the train was between the Jesus and Plaza de Espana stations.
Officials investigating the crash have ruled out a terrorist attack.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Zapatero has offered his condolences to the families of those killed and injured.
Mr Zapatero, who has cut short a state visit to India, said all necessary support on behalf of the government would be given to the victims.
The accident happened as Valencia was filling up with participants for the Catholic Church's fifth World Family Meeting, which is due to be closed by Pope Benedict XVI.
