Monaghan Mayor refused Canadian visa

The Mayor of Monaghan, Councillor Pat Treanor, has said he is disappointed with the decision by the Canadian authorities to refuse him entry to the country.

The Sinn Féin councillor, who is on his way back to Ireland, said he would be contacting the Canadian Embassy here on his return.

Cllr Treanor was leading a cross party delegation to Prince Edward Island, which is twinned with Co Monaghan, for a series of engagements with the Irish community on the island.

He has been in Canada twice in the last 12 months in his capacity as mayor.

A spokesperson for the Canadian Embassy in Dublin said it was aware of the matter and was looking into it.
