The chairman of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee has urged the Bush administration to negotiate directly with Iran to resolve the crisis over Tehran's nuclear programme.
The influential Republican senator, Richard Lugar, said talks with Iran could prove useful in breaking the impasse.
Any direct meeting would be the first between US and Iranian officials since the country's Islamic revolution in 1979.
