Mass protests planned for France

A day of mass protests is expected in France tomorrow over its contested youth jobs law, with hundreds of thousands set to join strikes and marches.

Unions and student groups hope to repeat their success last Tuesday when more than 1m people took to the streets to demonstrate against the unpopular First Employment Contract (CPE).

An open ended contract for under 26-year-olds that can be terminated in the first two years without explanation (now amended), the CPE was meant to tackle France's youth unemployment rate of 22%.

On Friday, President Chirac signed the measure into law but promised to amend its most contentious points by lowering the test period from two years to one, and requiring employers to offer a written explanation in case of dismissal.

Mr Chirac has asked for a new law to be drawn up in the coming  weeks, in consultation with unions.

Ryanair has cancelled the majority of flights into and out of France tomorrow.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus said they will run a full schedule of flights but that delays are expected, the extent of which will become clear tomorrow.
