Afghan man freed in Christian conversion case

An Afghan man who faced a possible death sentence for converting to Christianity from Islam has been freed from prison in Afghanistan.

Abdur Rahman, 40, was jailed this month for abandoning his faith, but the case was dismissed because he was found to be mentally unfit to stand trial.

The case was brought under Islamic Sharia law, which forbids the rejection of Islam.

Mr Rahman, who had been held in a maximum security jail on the outskirts of Kabul, converted 16 years ago in Pakistan and spent many years in Germany before returning to Afghanistan around 2002.

The case had provoked criticism from a number of countries, including Britain, Canada, Sweden, Germany and the US.

Mr Rahman is understood to be seeking asylum abroad with United Nations help.
