The United Nations has voted to establish a new body to work for the rights and freedom of individuals.

The Human Rights Council will replace the Geneva-based Human Rights Commission, which has been criticised for including among its membership countries with poor records on protecting liberty and free speech.

The US Ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, voted against the new body, but said he hoped it would be an improvement.
