The Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for a 'painstaking investigation' to find out why the roof of an indoor market collapsed, killing at least 49 people.

At least 31 people were injured when the entire roof, which was covered with snow, collapsed in the eastern part of the country.

Emergency officials are continuing to search for survivors trapped under the rubble.

They are using heat guns to blow warm air into the rubble to try to prevent victims from succumbing to the freezing temperatures.

It is estimated that up to 150 people were in the building at the time of the incident.
