The closure of the NEC Semiconductors factory in Ballivor, Co Meath has been confirmed following a three-hour meeting today between union officials and the executives of the Japanese parent company.
At the meeting, which took place in London, executives from NEC said the decision to close could not be reversed.
The union delegation, which also included local minister Noel Dempsey, also raised the issue of the future of the factory premises itself and asked the company to examine if it could be handed over to the community.
John Regan, SIPTU Meath organiser, said he was disappointed at the outcome of the meeting and said he had been assured by the company that they would do what they could to try and assist the 350 workers to get new jobs.
That will include retraining and upskilling before the factory closes in September.
He also expressed the hope that the talks on a redundancy deal would be completed as soon as possible to the satisfaction of both sides.
