No return until allegations withdrawn: Casey

watch listen

The former Bishop of Galway, Dr Eamonn Casey, has told RTÉ News he has no plans to return to Ireland until allegations of sexual impropriety made against him have been completely withdrawn.

Dr Casey has had to stand aside from active ministry in England after an allegation was made by a woman about an incident some years ago.

He said he had never been contacted by either the gardaí or British police about the allegation and had heard nothing about the matter, apart from what friends in Ireland told him.

Yesterday the Bishop of Galway, Dr Martin Drennan, said Dr Casey would be returning to Ireland soon and would receive a warm welcome.

But today Dr Drennan said Bishop Casey should make a public apology for his behaviour before he returned.
