The Taoiseach held a three-hour meeting with the Indian premier, Manmohan Singh, on the fourth day of his Indian trade mission in the capital New Delhi.

The two leaders discussed bilateral trade between the two countries and issues relating to United Nations reform.

Earlier, Mr Ahern said he hoped two large Indian software firms would consider outsourcing some of their workforce to Ireland.

Mr Ahern said he had not realised that so many large Indian companies were anxious to outsource their labour back to Europe and the markets where they did most business.

This represented an opportunity for Irish agencies, he maintained, and he said he hoped two large software companies that he visited earlier this week would consider Ireland as a base.

He was speaking on a visit to a Christian Brothers High School where he paid tribute to the role of Irish educators.

Gay marriage referendum would fail: Ahern

Meanwhile, Mr Ahern has said he does not think a referendum on single sex unions would be carried.

Speaking in New Delhi, he said at this stage it could be a divisive area and no-one had asked for it to be put to the people.

Mr Ahern said that he would study the all-party report on the issue, but indicated he would prefer a legislative solution.

Mr Ahern said that the gay organisations he had met primarily wanted financial issues like inheritance rights dealt with and he had indicated that this was an area that could be addressed.

On suggestions made by a senior PSNI officer that the IRA remained involved in organised crime, Mr Ahern said the most senior officer in the force had told him that things were going well in regard to IRA inactivity and that remained the intelligence from the Irish and British security agencies.
