Spain defies US on Venezuela deal

Spain says it will go ahead with the sale of military planes to Venezuela despite objections from the US.

However, the American components normally used in the aircraft will be replaced with more expensive European parts.

Venezuela says the equipment, which also includes patrol boats, is for defensive purposes and to prevent drug smuggling.

But the US has expressed concern that the Venezuelan government could use it to destabilise the region.

US State Department spokesman John Cormack said he hopes that Spain could understand Washington's position.
