The N55 between Ballinagh, Co Cavan, and Granard, Co Longford, has reopened following an accident earlier today.
More than 5,000 chickens were spilled into the carriageway from a lorry, creating dangerous driving conditions.
A crane was brought in to remove the lorry, and a second truck was put in place to remove the poultry.
Eggs had broken in the carriageway, and some of the chickens were laying there.
Diversions were in place for a time along the adjacent regional routes which are narrower and more hazardous. All restrictions have since been lifted.
