The former Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Jaime Sin, has died in a hospital in the city.
He was 76 and suffered multiple organ failure after a lengthy struggle with kidney problems and diabetes.
The cardinal played a major role in rallying public support for the popular revolt that toppled Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, and supported his successor, Corazon Aquino.
He had been one of the few vocal critics of military rule after President Marcos declared martial law in 1972.
Later, he helped rally the public for a military-backed popular uprising that toppled scandal-ridden President Joseph Estrada in 2001.
Current President Gloria Arroyo also enjoyed Cardinal Sin's support.
Cardinal Sin's body will lie in state at Manila Cathedral prior to his funeral, which is likely to take place next Tuesday.
