Gardaí in Limerick are investigating the origins of a fire at a pub in the city early this morning.

The fire broke out at Brannigan's pub in Mulgrave Street shortly after 4am. It is understood the interior of the premises was extensively damaged.

A technical examination was being carried out to try to find out whether the blaze was started deliberately.

Brannigan's pub was the location where Limerick criminal Wayne Dundon issued a threat to kill barman Ryan Lee in December last year.

Mr Lee was subsequently shot by a lone gunman in the pub. Dundon recently received a 10-year sentence at Limerick Circuit Court for issuing that threat.

Mr Lee and the Collins family, who own the pub, have been under garda protection since the incident last Christmas.
