Pope's personal papers are saved

Pope John Paul II - Personal papers are not burned

The personal papers of the late Pope John Paul II have not been burned, against his wishes.

His personal secretary has saved the papers saying they are a great treasure and should be preserved for posterity.

Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz said his devotion to the late Pope and his teachings outweighed his responsibility to follow Pope John Paul's request to burn his papers after his death.

He said the documents must first be studied, but he hoped they could be published and help in the process of beatification of John Paul.

Archbishop Dziwisz, who served as the late Pope's personal aide for almost 40 years, was named as the new Archbishop of Krakow last Friday.
