Two suspected ETA members arrested

Spanish police have arrested two suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA in Valencia, seizing explosives that they were said to be planning to use for imminent attacks.

The operation came only hours after the authorities published purported letters from ETA's alleged leader in which he ordered operatives to 'start killing people as soon as possible'.

Police searching the detainees' hotel room found 25 cartridges of explosive, as well as dynamite, a limpet mine, detonators, a pistol and documents on possible targets.

The interior ministry named the detainees as Mikel Orbegozo Etxarri, born in 1969, and Sara Majarenas Ibarreta, born in 1980.

Spain goes to the polls next Sunday in a referendum on the EU constitution.

ETA often stages attacks to coincide with major events, and rejects the constitution because it does not recognise a Basque nation.
