Dáil set to approve motion on NI crime

Bertie Ahern - McCabe releases 'off the table'

The Dáil is expected to overwhelmingly approve a motion calling on the Republican movement to end all criminal and paramilitary activity, after agreement was reached on a motion to be voted on tomorrow.

Agreement on the motion was reached after the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, confirmed that the early release of the killers of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe was no longer on the table.

Fine Gael had believed the Government's original proposed wording was ambiguous on the McCabe issue.

Mr Ahern also told the Dáil that the Government would not be intimidated by threats, no matter how implicit or subtle. This paved the way for substantial cross-party agreement.

After agreement was reached, the main parties combined to attack the Republican movement for continued paramilitary and criminal activity during the first day of a two-day Dáil debate on the motion.

Only the five Sinn Féin TDs and a number of Independents are expected to oppose the motion when it is voted upon tomorrow evening.

Ahern comments on IMC report

Speaking earlier in the Dáil, the Taoiseach said the latest report from the Independent Monitoring Commission goes further than he ever has in linking the IRA to the Northern Bank raid.

The IMC is the body responsible for assessing the activities of paramilitary groups.

The report, which was seen by the Cabinet today, is to be published on Thursday.

Labour leader Pat Rabbitte asked Bertie Ahern if the report had caused him to review his earlier statement that the robbery was the work of the IRA, and that the leadership of Sinn Féin must have had prior knowledge.

Mr Ahern said, if anything, it will go beyond anything he ever said.
