The former US President, Bill Clinton, the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and rock star Bono have taken part in a panel discussion on Africa at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos.

Bono warned that 2005 must be a turning point for Africa. He emphasised that leaders of the G8 group of industrialised nations were carrying the hopes of a generation.

'Our generation wants to be remembered for something other than the war on terror. We actually want to perhaps be the generation that's remembered for ending extreme poverty,' Bono said.

They were joined in the discussion by the South African leader, Thabo Mbeki, President Obasanjo of Nigeria and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Mr Gates has pledged $750 million of his personal fortune towards making much needed vaccines available in the Third World.

Mr Blair opened the forum yesterday with a pledge to champion the drive against climate change and poverty during his presidency of the G8 group this year.
