The inauguration of the newly-elected Ukrainian President, Viktor Yushchenko, will take place on Sunday.

Pro-Western Mr Yushchenko won last month's presidential election re-run, ending a political crisis in which his opponent was accused of electoral fraud.

Ukraine's Supreme Court issued a ruling in the early hours of this morning upholding Mr Yushchenko's victory following days of deliberation.

The court rejected an appeal against the result filed by the government candidate, Viktor Yanukovich.

A total of 309 deputies in the 450-seat chamber passed a decision to hold the president's inauguration on 23 January.

Mr Yushchenko has said he wants to move Ukraine closer to Europe while maintaining traditional links with Russia.
