Former Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang dies

The former leader of the Chinese Communist Party, Zhao Ziyang, has died in a Beijing hospital. He was 85 and had suffered a series of strokes.

Mr Zhao was appointed Prime Minister in 1980 and became head of the party seven years later.

He was removed from power in 1989 when he opposed the military crackdown on protestors in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

He had lived under house arrest for the past 15 years.
