The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has appointed a new chief of staff to help reform the world body as it deals with allegations of corruption and strained relations with the US.

Mark Mallock Brown, who is also head of the UN Development Programme, will replace long-standing Iqbal Riza.

Mr Riza announced his resignation last month amid UN staff unrest.

The newly-appointed Briton said Mr Annan wants to ensure the UN is in good shape as he sees out the last two years of his second term.
