The French President, Jacques Chirac, is in London to mark the centenary of the Entente Cordiale.

The pact ended colonial rivalries between the two countries.

British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, today continued his efforts to draw a line under his differences with Jacques Chirac over the Iraq war.

Speaking at a London press conference following talks with the French leader, Mr Blair reassured journalists that the two countries continued to work closely together.

It is thought the visit might go some way towards mending relations between France and Britain, which have been strained by disagreement over the war in Iraq.

However, on the eve of the visit, Mr Chirac, who led European opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq last year, said he was ‘not at all sure’ that the world had become safer since the ousting of Saddam Hussein.
